THE DUEL

They scream instead of talking
Short bursts of accusation and denial to temper their interactions
At it in constant rhythm since the day beginning of time
Winding down to this moment when roles have been exchanged, reversed, and rewritten
A litany of resentment slipping between the lines of sharp chatter
Terse banter that usually ends in a bang
The clang of obligation and promises made long ago
Before the mighty blow of age began to take its toll
And old was an idea whose time had not yet come
Today sunset runs to dull any brilliance that remains
As they strain to cope with the blinding glare
Unaware of when twilight will overtake
So they wait for darkness to fall
All the while fighting each other
Mother and daughter
A duel to the death
